Things to do with kids while home

Life has been turned upside down!  I think it’s safe to say that what was once our normal is forever altered. That’s not to say that the new normal isn’t something that we’ll find a way to love. But for now, it’s all a bit topsy turvy and we’re all navigating through together. We’re finding different ways to cope and communicate.

When we first become a parent, we’re in a fog for the first several weeks (sometimes even months). We want to protect and shelter our babies from the outside world.  In some ways, what we’re experiencing can be compared to those early stages. We survived that stage and we’ll survive this one!

I left my corporate job to be home with my babies. Being home with them during this time is amazing. But, it’s also exhausting. They can feel that things are different. They aren’t able to be in school or socialize with their friends. I’m not able to escape for a workout. I’m reorganizing my day to fit work in when I can. You’re likely doing all the same thing.

We’re all learning how to create a new cadence for the day. We’re having to adjust our new routines. We have little hands to keep busy - if you’re running out of ways to keep the little ones in your life occupied, here is my roundup!

Things to do with kids while home

  • Shaving cream letters on a baking sheet -although this is super messy, it’s really fun!

  • Trace several shapes,  then paint each one a different color, then cut them out. Bonus if you can find a way to put them together to form another shape.

  • Put color and a number from a cup, take cheerios from an ice cube tray and put them in the correct colored cup ( we use the counting bears cups from Amazon). I’ve shared this one on Instagram Stories.

  • Trace out easy math equations (1 + 1= 2)  (1+2 = 3) to familiarize them with math

  • Trace their hands  - have your little one cut them out and make spring flowers.

  • A fun activity that is perfect for learning AND Easter - put upper and lower case letters on Easter eggs and have them match them up.

  • Using toilet and paper towel rolls, make an Easter Bunny for Easter using pink and white construction paper, google eyes, and poms.

  • We’ve also used 6 toilet rolls and covered the facades with construction paper - then we drew windows, doors and clocks to build a little city. Bonus: use paper towel rolls to mix up the height.

  • For my little ones, I have been going over flashcards with different objects on them

  • Interactive play! Build forts, let them dress up like doctors and princesses, have them make-up jobs for everyday objects (ie- a couch cushion could be a life preserver that you use to float to a deserted island).

  • GET OUTSIDE! If you have a yard, kick a ball around - walk around to neighbors’ houses and write hello messages to them in chalk.  Pro-tip: dipping chalk in water makes it smoother to write and dries in its original color.

  • Learn to ride a scooter or bike (be sure they wear their helmet - we don’t need hospital visits right now)

  • While I am NOT a fan of screen time, I did pick up an OSMO. This gives me a solid 15 minutes of educational play while I prepare breakfast or lunch.  We ordered the little genius starter kit on Amazon.
