Creating a Cohesive Brand Through Your Imagery: A Guide for Photographers

Using your images to create a cohesive brand is an important part of a successful photography business. When clients look at your website or social media, they should be able to identify that it’s your work right away due to the selection of images and how they align with your photography style. Selecting the images for your website or social media should be a strategic process, so let’s get into how to create a cohesive brand through your imagery.

Select Your Best Work

To create a cohesive brand across your marketing platforms, you need to choose images that reflect your best work. Potential clients will decide whether they want to keep viewing your website or social media pages within the first few seconds of arriving, so you want to capture their attention with your best images. You’ll also want to choose images that reflect the type of clients you’re looking for. If you’re a newborn photographer, you want to highlight your newborn images right away.

Create a Cohesive Brand Through Consistent Images

After selecting your best images, you’ll want to make sure you have a consistent tone across all images. For example, if you’re editing style is light and airy, you’ll want to choose images that reflect that style. When you’re scrolling through your social media or website, you don’t necessarily want something to drastically stand out. It should be a smooth, visually appealing scroll for potential clients in order to create a cohesive brand. For example, if you’re choosing to showcase photos that feature shades of green, then adding in a photo that contains a lot of red will stand out too much.

One way to ensure you have a cohesive brand through your images is by providing a client wardrobe or by offering wardrobe suggestions which can be a part of your client experience. If you offer hair and makeup as part of your services, that can also lead to an overall cohesive look.

Choose Emotive Images

You’ll want to choose images that tell a story or resonate with the viewer in order to create a cohesive brand. While you probably have a lot of beautiful images from your sessions, you’ll want to choose images that are emotive and cause the viewer to feel something. Telling a story through your images is one of the best ways to sell your services without being “salesy”, so try to incorporate a narrative in the images you choose.

Finally, you’ll also want to think about the perspective of the photos you choose. Consider pairing a photo that’s closer up with a photo that’s farther away. Also add in some mid-range photos as well.
